Will a wireless fence work for me ?

Wireless fences are an intriguing option for many folks, and with good reason — installing wire around a containment area is both time consuming and expensive. Unfortunately, while they sound fantastic in theory, wireless dog fences only work well for a minority of customers. Here's why...

All wireless fences emit their signal in a circle around the transmitter. So, to understand how a wireless fence will work for your home, you must first determine where you will plug in the transmitter. Now, draw a large mental circle — imagining the wireless transmitter directly in the center — that extends to the closest edge of your property. Unless you don't mind your dog wandering onto your neighbor's property, that's where your invisible boundary will fall.

In effect, wireless fences limit you to ONE configuration option (a circle), just in varying sizes (you can dial the size of the radius up and down). So, if you have a very large yard and you don't particularly care what areas of the yard your dog can access, a wireless fence may work beautifully for you. If, on the other hand, you have a small or oddly-shaped yard, or if you want to protect areas like pools or landscaping, a wireless dog fence likely won't work the way you want it to.

In my experience, wireless fences work best for folks with large acreage who simply want to keep their dogs on their property. Of course, even for these folks, a wireless dog fence isn't appropriate if they want their dog to have access to their entire property, or if they want to block areas that lie inside the containment zone.

If you decide that a wireless dog fence is the right choice for you, read my product reviews on the PetSafe Wireless and Perimeter Wire-Free fences before you make your purchase.

If, on the other hand, you think a wireless fence is not your best choice, consider an in-ground dog fence like the PetSafe Deluxe Fence or SportDOG In-Ground Fence. I highly recommend both of these products based on their price points and feature sets.
