Product Review: Guardian Underground Fence
Guardian in-ground dog fences are manufactured by the same company that makes PetSafe and Invisible Fence products. Effectively, this is their bottom-end line that sells primarily at WalMart stores.
Guardian fences include a receiver with only two different correction levels, which (in my opinion) makes the product unsuitable for most dogs. In short, for a sensitive dog, the available correction levels will be too high, and for a confident dog the levels will be too low — and you won't know which category your dog falls in until you begin fence training. Plus, you can't use a two-level receiver with the low-stress training techniques I discuss on this site — for me, that's a must for any dog.
Really, there are only two things to recommend about this dog fence: 1) It uses standard batteries you can find cheap almost anywhere, meaning you don't have to search for the expensive proprietary batteries required by most other dog fence products, and 2) It's relatively inexpensive.
If you're considering this product, I recommend the PetSafe Deluxe Fence instead, which is slightly more expensive but much higher quality.
Product Features
Guardian dog fences include thin, stranded wire as a standard part of the hardware package. To make sure your dog fence installation is reliable over the long term, you should separately purchase wire that is at least 18-gauge at a local wire specialty store. Considering how inexpensive the Guardian product is to begin with and what a pain wire breaks can be, this upgrade is really worth the up-front cost.
The Guardian transmitter powers up to 5 acres, which is sufficient for most users; but, it does not include built-in lightning protection, so you should purchase a separate lightning protection device (like this Panamax) if you decide to buy this product.
Support
Guardian products include a training and installation DVD, and a limited product warranty. Warranty returns are handled by mail.
